Extra 12 months proposed for Deforestation Regulation

The Deforestation Regulation implementation has been object of recent discussions due to the industry unpreparedness for its application on 30 December 2024. Amid pressure from businesses and international partners, at the beginning of October, the European Commission proposed extra 12 months to prepare for this landmark law.

Proposed delay for application of Deforestation Regulation gives more time to prepare

The Proposal would introduce new application dates: 30 December 2025 for large companies and 30 June 2026 for micro and small enterprise. This additional 12 months should give companies the necessary time to phase in the system. The Proposal has to go through the approval of the European Parliament and the Council.

The Commission published also various tools to support operators in the Regulation’s implementation, such as:

  • Guidance on EU Deforestation Regulation, with 11 chapters covering, among others, legality requirements, application timeline, agricultural use, and product scope’s clarifications.
  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on Implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation, addressing 10 major topics: traceability, scope, obligations’ subjects, definitions, due diligence, benchmarking and partnerships, implementation, timelines, penalties, and other questions.
  • Strategic Framework for International Cooperation Engagement.
