On 21 November 2023, the European Parliament adopted its position on the new rules on packaging, the proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. With 426 votes in favor, the Parliament takes another important step to tackle packaging waste, fight chemical pollutants, and boost recycling.
Proposal for a revision of EU legislation on Packaging and Packaging Waste
The European Commission published the Proposal on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation in November 2022. According to the new rules, all packaging should become recyclable by 2030 and recycled by 2050. Significantly, the MEPs also ask for a ban on the use of “forever chemicals” (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances or PFASs) and Bisphenol A in food contact packaging. However, the results achieved on the circular economy targets are less favorable, with a mitigation of the re-use provisions. After the Council has adopted its position, the Parliament will start talks with the Member States for a final text.
