On 20 July 2026, the European Commission officially launched the Digital Product Passport (DPP) Registry. The DPP Registry is a digital container of information established under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (EU ESPR). The new Registry supports the functioning of the Digital Product Passport, helping to improve product traceability, supply chain transparency, and access to sustainability information across the EU.
Functions of the DPP Registry
The DPP Registry is a secure database that stores the unique identifiers, registration data, and high-level metadata for each product, while the DPP itself contains the full detailed product information. The DPP supports transparency as well as compliance. Consumers will be able to access the product’s details in order to make informed purchasing decisions and find repairers and recyclers for their products. The Registry also supports enforcement activities. For instance, customs authorities can verify electronically that imported products have a valid registered DPP and commodity code, while market surveillance authorities can access registered DPPs for their surveillance activities.
Before being placed on the market, the relevant economic operator must register the product’s DPP in the Registry in accordance with the applicable legislation.
Specific DPP requirements for products in the EU
The specific DPP requirements for a product are defined in two ways:
- Through delegated acts adopted under the Ecodesign Regulation, such as iron and steel, energy-related products, textiles, tyres, and aluminium, furniture, mattresses, and ICT products.
- Through specific legislation such as Batteries Regulation, PPWR, European Critical Raw Materials Act, Toys Safety Regulation, Construction Products Regulation and Detergents Regulation.
